Boys Varsity Football – 10/17/2008 Orchard View
Orchard View 41 Fremont 18
By Ken DeLaat
Fremont played the Lakes 8 champs hard but Orchard View proved to be too much Friday
as the Cardinals shook off the Packer rallies and fought their way to their seventh
win in a row, 41-18.
The Pack put a scare into the Cardinals, jumping off to a 10-0 lead behind a touchdown
dive from quarterback T.J. Davis and an Ethan McCarthy field goal, but two quick
Cardinal scores put them in front 14-10 at the half. They added two more scores
in the third to sit at 26-10, and seemed to have the game under control, but the
Pack stormed back behind the running of Matt Terveer and Davis’ passing as
he hit favorite target Alec Beattie for a 25-yard touchdown. Mac Houston then pulled
in a Davis toss for the 2 point conversion and Fremont crawled to within 8 points,
but OV was relentless, scoring twice more in the fourth to ice the game.
Terveer set a school record for rushing in a season, piling up 163 yards for the
game, and Davis completed 14 passes for 176 yards. The loss puts the Packers at
4-4 (4-3) on the year with winless Benzie Central paying a visit to end the regular
season on Friday.

Boys Varsity Football – 10/10/2008 Ludington
Ludington 42 Fremont 35
By Ken DeLaat
Fremont outgained Ludington and dominated in time of posses sion, but the Pack fell
short in one important category.
The score.
Capitalizing on big plays and a game-changing turnover late in the game, the Orioles
were able to outlast the Packers in a wild home coming scoring fest.
The game featured a relentless Fremont team that kept grinding out points to keep
coming back from Ludington quarterback Josh Bader’s huge night. Bader tossed
three touchdown passes, then intercepted a Packer toss in the game’s waning
minutes and shortly thereafter deposited the game win ning pass into the arms of
his twin brother, Jake Bader.
T.J. Davis scored two touchdowns on the ground and hit Alec Beattie with a pass
for another. Beattie also took a scoring toss from Joe Frendo late in the game and
totaled 8 receptions on the night.
The Packer offensive line, a group that should gain some post-season recognition,
continues to excel, and Matt Terveer continues to use his explosive running to take
advantage of it as he rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown. Frendo led all tacklers
with 10, as he continued his strong defensive play this year. Davis and Beattie
tallied intercep tions for Fremont.
The loss put the Packers in a three-way tie for second place in the Lakes 8 with
a 4-2 mark. With a season record of 4-3, the Packers need two wins to guarantee
a play off spot. Fremont is scheduled to host league leading Orchard View this week.
OV has run off six straight impressive victories after a season opening loss to
powerhouse Montague.

Boys Varsity Football – 10/3/2008 Newaygo
Fremont 14 – Newaygo 0
Fremont wins hard-fought Homecoming game at Newaygo
By Ken DeLaat
Two teams with a history.
Two teams with playoff aspirations looking to close within two wins of a spot in
the post season.
Two coaches whose per sonalities are imprinted on their teams.
Two groups of players who provide a full 48 minutes of hard-nosed football when
ever they take the field.
And one ultimate victor.
On homecoming night for the Lions, the Fremont Packers came into town with a well
prepared game plan that was executed with the precision of a surgeon. They walked
away with a 14-0 win. The Lions threw everything in their arse nal at the Packers.
Three times they marched deep into Packer territory and three times they came away
empty handed.
The line play was terrific from both sides of the field and the old saying about
“the battle of the trenches” rang true Friday night as this sideline
reporter came away impressed with the intensity of play in these “mini-wars”
between the two sides. Hard-hitting and bone-crushing tackles were on the menu throughout
the game.
Matt Terveer was a work horse in the Fremont back field with 154 yards, and scored
the two Packer touch downs, the first a seven-yard run culminating a time-con suming
drive from deep in their own territory early in the second quarter.
Terveer scored again in the third quarter on a nine-yard sprint. Kicker Ethan McCarthy
was successful on both PAT’s.
The Lions kept hammering away at the Packer defense and a 54-yard kickoff return
by Jameson Farinosi fol lowing the second Terveer tally had them poised to claw
back into the game, but time after time the Fremont defense stiffened and the Lions
couldn’t get the big plays they needed.
“The three defensive stops when Newaygo was in the red zone were pretty crucial,”
said Packer Head Coach Mark Houston. “Terveer running behind Tyler Gotts,
Dustin Runions, Rick Titman, Jeff Hall and Adam DeKryger once again proved to be
very effec tive.”
“We had some key per sonnel changes because of eligibility and injury, so
this win was truly a team effort,” Houston added.
“Friday was a hard-fought game between two teams with a lot of pride on the
line,” said Newaygo Head Coach Jeremy Gasper. “Every kid on the field
played their hearts out and in the end, it was a credit to Fremont that they made
the plays to get points on the board and keep us off the board. It was a fun game
to be a part of and it is obvi ously disappointing that we could not come through
in situations where we needed to.”
Creighton Bradley and Peter Gil gained 54 and 44 yards respectively in the loss,
which drops the Lions to 3-3 on the season and 2-3 in the Lakes 8 while Fremont
improved to 4-2 (4-1) .

Boys Varsity Football – 9/26/2008 Fruitport
Fruitport 45 Fremont 14
Packers jumped out to a 14-0 lead with two first quarter touchdown runs by Matt
Terveer, but once the Trojans settled in, they were able to run off 45 points in
a row as they made their presence felt in the Lakes 8 conference race.
The Fruitport defense shut down Terveer and the Trojans dominated line play on both
sides of the ball. T.J. Davis hit 8 passes as the Pack attempted to go to the air
when the running game was stopped. Alec Beattie took in 4 of those passes.
Adam DeKryger led the Packer defense with 12 tackles and Joe Frendo tallied 9.
Fremont dropped to 3-2 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.

Boys Varsity Football – 9/19/2008 TriCounty
Fremont continues to rise in Lakes 8 standings
The Packers of Fremont were at home riding a modest two-game win streak against a visiting Tri-County team that has struggled in the early going this season.
By the time the dust had settled, the streak had reached three and the Vikings remained winless as the Packers rolled to a 42-16 win on Friday night.
Tri-County drew first blood with a time-consuming initial drive that was highlighted by a big run from Duke Kloe, several defensive stops and two costly personal foul penalties that put T-C in position to score on a 4 yard run by Zach Rouhan.
Two minutes later, Packer back Matt Terveer roared into the end zone behind an awesome display of blocking by the offensive line led by Dustin Runions and Adam DeKryger. A two-point conversion knotted the game at 8-8.
After the defense stopped the Vikings and turned the ball over to the offense, Fremont moved the ball well but was halted at the Viking 16. Coach Mark Houston sent out Ethan McCarthy, who promptly booted a 34-yard field goal to make it 11-8 gand ive the Pack a lead they would not surrender.
After that, it was all Packers, with another McCarthy field goal making it 14-8, another Terveer touchdown run from 2 yards and a 6-yard pass from TJ. Davis to Alec Beattie to give Fremont a 29-8 halftime lead.
The second half brought more of the same, with Terveer scoring on a one yard run after having moved the ball there with a 45-yard scamper, then late in the third quarter Mac Houston picked up a Viking fumble and raced 54 yards for the Packers’ final tally.
The Vikings managed another score on a 41-yard run by Jon Wilson late in the fourth quarter.
“I thought we played pretty well on the line tonight,” said Runions. “We were able to open up some holes for our backs and give them some room.”
“The two of us and (center) Rick Titman have been playing together three years now, so we’re pretty familiar with each other,” added DeKryger.
“We did some good things out there, said Coach Houston. “We got some big hits, ran an effective two-minute drill, and heck, we haven’t kicked a field goal in years and we got two tonight.”
“But, we didn’t play the kind of football that it takes to beat some of the better teams we face. We had mistakes, fumbles and costly penalties,” he added. “We know that we need to be tough, in shape, hit hard, and be disciplined. We were three of those things tonight, because we were not disciplined.”
A bright spot for Tri-County was the defensive gem turned in by Gabe Vickey, who seemed to be all over the field making touchdown saving tackles and running down ball carriers up and down the field. Vickey’s numerous tackles and broken-up passes stopped the contest from being an ever larger margin and his level of play remained high regardless of the score.
Fremont is now 3-1 on the season and 3-0 in Lakes 8 play, while Tri-County falls to 0-4 (0-3).

Boys Varsity Football – 9/12/2008 Grant
Fremont posts area’s only victory
By Ken DeLaat
It was a weekend that saw only one area team emerge victorious, and that win came
against another area team.
Fremont rolled into Grant and, behind an offensive juggernaut, blazed to a 51-7
victory. Matt Terveer scored twice and was joined by Alec Beattie, T.J. Davis, Nick
Coffee and Zach Van Hummel in scoring out of the Fremont offense.
Luke Young recovered a fumble and scored from 14 yards and Davis blocked a punt
for a safety to highlight a strong defensive perfor mance. Joe Frendo and Mac Houston
led the Packers in tackles as the team improved to 2-1 (2-0 in the Lakes 8).
The Tigers matched Fremont’s first score with a 72-yard gallop by Brian Ferrer
to knot the game at 7-7, but were then shut down by the Packer defense. Grant fell
to 0-3 (0-2) for the season.
“The blocked punt in the first half really led to the wheels coming off the
apple cart,” said Grant Coach Jim Stickney. “Now we need to pull ourselves
up by our bootstraps and prepare for Orchard View.”
