Boys Cross Country – 11/7/2009 State Finals

Filed under: Cross Country, Sports News HS, Student News HS — fpsblog @ 3:19 PM

Clearly not the way we wanted to end our season.

The boy’s and I are disappointed to end our season with this performance. As I stated in my regional email we had been lucky to avoid the flu that is going around. Our luck ran out. By the race our top 3 were ill, and I did not do a good job of protecting the healthy athletes from the down on our luck feeling going into the meet. The boys tried their best under the circumstances and are looking forward to next year. As we look at the results there are a lot of what ifs, but on the day we finished 18th head to head and will have to run much better next year. Nick Butcher, though ill was able to run 16:27 to finish All-State.

It was a good season, and hopefully a good dose of motivation has been planted.

Boys Cross Country – 10/31/2009 Regionals

Filed under: Cross Country, Sports News HS, Student News HS — fpsblog @ 6:00 PM

Sorry this is out late, but I was abducted by a pirate and witch upon getting home and forced to go in search of candy.  A great way to end off a great day.

At Benzie Central HS
The boys stepped up to the plate and ran a great race.  Going in we felt like we could win if we ran to our capabilities.  On paper we were also slightly favored.  But in our only head to head meeting with Gaylord at Portage, we got spanked.  We had a really good freshen up workout on Thursday so I think the boys were feeling good about things.  We have also been able to avoid the flu that is going around so far.  The weather was pretty adverse – mid 30s, high winds and alternating rain, hail and sleet.  The flat course held up pretty well for all the rain we have had, with just a few muddy spots.  We had to juggle our warm up a little as things got 1/2 hour behind schedule, and the boys managed it very well.

Our starting box was position two down from Gaylord so we knew we would be able to keep an eye on them right from the start.  At the gun the race went out fast, very fast.  Nick Butcher assumed the lead 200 m in and was laying on the pace.  Just past the 1000, Jake Featherstone was positioned nicely in the top 5 with our pack of 3, Sam Schuiteman, Tommy Jewett, and Charlie Fias, grouped in the top 20, intermingled with Gaylord’s pack of 5.  Tyler Green was looking good in the 50s, with Calvin Crowley getting a decent start to put him in the 70s.  The next time I was able to see the athletes was just before the 3000.  At this point Nick was starting to pull away from a couple of freshmen studs, one from Big Rapids the other Cedar Springs.  Jake was leading a tightly bunched group of 5 in 5th place.  Sam and Tommy were working well together having moved up into 11th and 12th.  Charlie had fallen off the pace just a little and was fighting for a place in the top 20.  Tyler Green had moved up into the 40s and Calvin was holding position in the 70s.  At this point if we could hold it together over the final mile we would win as we had 4 in front of Gaylord’s 1st.

We ran well over the last 1000 to seal the victory.  Nick answered some challenges to win by 7 seconds.  Jake was unable to hold off the pack but battled well to finish 8th.  Tommy and Sam stayed together holding their positions to the line, while Charlie, Tyler and Calvin all had strong finishes to move up in position.  Tyler and Calvin both ran PRs, Tyler to break 18:00 and Calvin to break 19:00.

1  Nick Butcher 16:13
8  Jake Featherstone 16:43
11 Tommy Jewett  16:53
12 Sam Schuiteman 16:55
20 Charlie Fias  17:16
37 Tyler Green  17:55
72 Calvin Crowley  18:52

Team Scores
Fremont 52
Gaylord 91
Big Rapids 120

Goals going into the meet were to put 5 in the 16s, 5 in the top 15, and 4 ahead of Gaylord’s 1st.  We were close.

These boys and the athletes of the past 8 years have strung together 9 consecutive Regional Championships.  I have been pretty lucky to have been able to work with kids willing to put in the hard work to achieve these rewards.

The work continues on as we get ready for the State Championships on Saturday at MIS.
Hope to see you there,
Coach

Fremont – 9th Straight Regional Championship

Local reports | The Muskegon Chronicle, October 31, 2009 10:07 p.m.

Fremont’s boys cross country team is seemingly immune to the weather – especially at regionals.
The Packer boys team won its ninth-straight regional championship on Saturday, capturing the 15-team Division 2 regional at Benzonia-Benzie Central with 52 points.

Nick Butcher led the way for Fremont with the overall title in 16:13.

Jake Featherstone took eighth, Tommy Jewett 11th, Sam Schuiteman 12th and Charlie Fias 20th to round out the Packers’ scoring.

"The boys stepped up to the plate and ran a great race," said Fremont coach Cliff Somers. "Going in we felt like we could win if we ran to our capabilities."

Gaylord took second (91), Ludington was eighth, Whitehall 10th, Fruitport 11th, Orchard View 12th and Grant 14th.

Whitehall’s Greg Madendorp placed fourth, Ludington’s Adrian Martinez (10th) and Luke Johnson (16th), Fruitport’s Kevin Kyle was 22nd and Orchard View’s Chris Zitka (28th) and Brandon Keur (32nd). Grant’s Kyle Starr took 38th.

Girls Cross Country – 10/31/2009 Regionals

Here’s the final race report and results of the 2009 Girls Cross Country Adventure.

It is hoped that plans be made to attend the MHSAA State Cross Country Championships next week at Michigan International Speedway near Jackson.  Your attendance will support Fremont’s tradition for excellence in Cross Country, the Regional winning boys team, and perhaps a spark of inspiration for the girls to set goals to one day return as a team to the championship event.

Thanks for your contributions to the 2009 Adventure.

High School Sports – Fall 2009 Update

As the fall season is nearing an end, I just want to send a quick email and let everyone know what is taking place in the world of Fremont Athletics.

Soccer
The boys soccer just concluded their season with a great district run.  The boys lost this past Saturday in the district final to Sparta, the boys played extremely hard throughout district tournament.

Cross Country
The boys cross country team recently won the Lakes 8 conference and are gearing up for another regional title.  The girls cross country team is also gearing up for the regional meet this weekend.

Tennis
Paul Blais had an outstanding season and went to the state tournament after placing second in the region.

Volleyball
Volleyball is battling it out with Fruitport and Spring Lake for the top three spots in the Lakes 8.  As conference play comes to an end this weekend, they are getting prepared to defend their district title within the couple weeks.

Swimming
Destiny Noordyke has qualified for the state tournament and Coach Pekel is hoping that a few more girls are going to have their opportunity to qualify for state in the last couple meets.

Football
The football team finished second in the league behind Spring Lake.  The football team has qualified for the playoffs and opens the district tournament against Big Rapids this Friday.

Just a few notes on what is taking place within Athletics.  If you know an athlete, be sure to congratulate them on all their hard work throughout the fall season.

Thanks,

Rob Pouch

Cold, Drizzle, Wind

In a surprise upset the boys beat State #1 ranked Ionia to win 41 to 44. After getting spanked at Portage we were going in to the meet to run with confidence and see how close we could get to them. Jake Featherstone didn’t run at Portage so having him back was a help as were the late season improvement by Tommy Jewett and the break out race for Charlie Fias. The boys ran well in tough conditions and our 1-5 split was under a minute for the first time all season. Comparing past results Ionia was missing their #1 and #6 runners so we are not going to get big heads. What we are going to do is focus on being a "healthy" team from here on out, and try to put the finishing touches on our training. Continue Reading >>

Boys Cross Country – 10/20/2009 Conference Championships Spring Lake

Filed under: Cross Country, Sports News HS, Student News HS — fpsblog @ 8:56 AM

Conference Championships at Laker Trail – Spring Lake

Conference Champions – 8th straight

There was an important race for us, kicking off “tournament time”.  The big focus has been on a repeat at regional’s, so I was a little concerned about a let down here.  Monday we had a good “strat chat” about the meet.  The goal was to put 4 in the top 5, 6 in the top 14, and 7 in the top 21.  The boys were pretty loose on the warm up.  Doing strides on the start line they really started to look focused.  At the gun we got out well, not fast but just in solid position.  It was clear that the boys were running with confidence.  Continue Reading >>

Girls Cross Country – 10/10/2009 Portage

The Fremont Girls Cross Country team competed in the Portage Invitational on Saturday, October 10. It was a good day to race with dry, cool conditions and large competitive fields. The course was fast, and so were the girls. Six of eight girls recorded personal record times over the 5 Km (3.1 mile) course. WOW! Continue Reading >>

Cold – breezy

The boys ran well with many PRs.

Nick got right in the mix at the front and raced well to the a 6th place finish.  He was probably a little to aggressive early on, battling for the lead at the 800, but he raced will grit and was the top junior in our race.  Sam Schuiteman had a huge breakthrough to become our second fasted finisher this season.  He really moved up well throughout the race.  Charlie Fias is trying to fight his way back to some fitness also.  Calvin Crowley, Chris Hall and Caleb Arends also recorded big PRs as the gaps continue to close.  Results can be found at www.portageinvite.com.  The team finished 16th out of 41 teams.

Cold – Rain – Wind

A solid performance turned in by the boys.  We placed 4 in the top 7 with Nick Butcher and Jake Featherstone leading the way.  Calvin Crowley turned in a solid performance after missing a week due to illness.  We still need to close the gap to our 5th, 6th and 7th.  Charlie Fias rolled his ankle again (coaches error).  New addition Leo Botello ran his way onto varsity after 3 days of running.

Big race this weekend at Portage.  The boys race at 2:00.  We will be missing Jake and possibly Charlie.

The varsity was pumped by the big PRs set by the JV guys and hoped to repeat that. The race went out pretty fast with Nick Butcher going straight to the front a pushing the pace and a large pack to a 4:52 mile. Continue Reading >>

Cross Country – Lakes 8 Jamboree at Fremont

Nick Butcher breaks 18:00 minutes.  That does not happen very often at Branstrom Park.  All the Fremont Boys ran well.  Jake Featherstone just missed 18 while Freshman Tyler Green continues to improve as he just missed breaking 20:00.  Other good news was that Charlie Fias was able to run a little on the road, so we are hoping to have him back running by the end of the season.
