FHS swim team defeats Ottawa Hills
Fremont 70 Ottawa Hills 32
Fremont High School swimmers took nine first place finishes to defeat Ottawa Hills
by 70 to 32 on Thursday, Dec. 11, 70 to 32 at the Packers’ first home meet.
Fremont is now 1-1.
Nate McLean and Andrew Hines each had two first place finishes and swam legs in
winning relay teams.
McLean took firsts in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Hines finished first
in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Both were on the first place
200 medley relay team along with Zach McGinn and DJ Schilhaneck. Fremont’s
200 free relay won with McLean, Logan Essebaggers, Keith Marek and Zach McGinn.
Fremont’s first place finishers included Chris Hall in the 500 and the 200
Freestyle and Marek in the 100 Freestyle.
“It was a great meet,” said Coach Mary Pekel. “Practice is really
starting to pay off. We’re starting to come together and work together.”

Packers face GR team

The Fremont High School boys varsity swim team got the opening meet jitters out
of the way in the first half of the meet against the Grand Rapids Creston/Central
team on Thursday, Dec.4.
Fremont Coach Mary Pekel said that her young team worked out of its first half nerves
to post a strong finish in the second half, but not enough to catch the Grand Rapids
team, which won by a score of 104 to 81.
‘After only six days of practice with half the team being new, we swam much better
times and started taking some places at the end,” Pekel said.
In the 100m back stroke, the Packers took the top three with DJ Schilhaneck in first
with 1:16.58. Chris Hall took second and Andrew Hines was third.
In the 100m breast stroke, Fremont’s Nate McLean took first and Mike DeKuiper was
second. In the 400m freestyle relay, Fremont took second and third.
TJ Davis, Zach McGinn and Mark Dulyea took third, fourth and fifth place, respectively,
in their first diving meet.
The team of Hall, DeKuiper, Ben Blamer and Keith Marek placed third in the 200 medley
relay. McLean placed second in the 50m freestyle and Hines was second in the 100m
butterfly. Hall won the 500m freestyle and Matt Rusco was second.
The team of McGinn, Schilhaneck, Rob Content and McLean placed second in the 200
freestyle relay. The team of Blamer, DeKuiper, Logan Essebaggers and Hines was third.
The team of Marek, Essebaggers, Hunter Hannah and Richard Andre placed second in
the 400m freestyle relay, and the team of Nate Hawkins, Rusco, Blamer and Hall placed
third.
The Packers’ next home meet is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 11 at 6 p.m.
