High School Sports – Fall 2009 Update

As the fall season is nearing an end, I just want to send a quick email and let everyone know what is taking place in the world of Fremont Athletics.

Soccer
The boys soccer just concluded their season with a great district run.  The boys lost this past Saturday in the district final to Sparta, the boys played extremely hard throughout district tournament.

Cross Country
The boys cross country team recently won the Lakes 8 conference and are gearing up for another regional title.  The girls cross country team is also gearing up for the regional meet this weekend.

Tennis
Paul Blais had an outstanding season and went to the state tournament after placing second in the region.

Volleyball
Volleyball is battling it out with Fruitport and Spring Lake for the top three spots in the Lakes 8.  As conference play comes to an end this weekend, they are getting prepared to defend their district title within the couple weeks.

Swimming
Destiny Noordyke has qualified for the state tournament and Coach Pekel is hoping that a few more girls are going to have their opportunity to qualify for state in the last couple meets.

Football
The football team finished second in the league behind Spring Lake.  The football team has qualified for the playoffs and opens the district tournament against Big Rapids this Friday.

Just a few notes on what is taking place within Athletics.  If you know an athlete, be sure to congratulate them on all their hard work throughout the fall season.

Thanks,

Rob Pouch
Athletic/Recreation Director
Head Football Coach

Fruitport volleyball takes control of Lakes 8 race with win over rival Fremont

Scott Brandenburg | Muskegon Chronicle, October 14, 2009 12:57 a.m.

FREMONT — Fruitport kept control of the Lakes 8 Conference in another league showdown with Fremont.

The Packers made it interesting, though.

"I thought we had some good plays offensively and defensively," said Fremont coach Tressa Wenk. "We had a tough time picking up (Hazekamp’s) tips.

"I know we can play with them. Hopefully, things will turn out different the next time we play." Continue Reading >>

SPARTA – A two-year regional title drought was more than long enough in the eyes
of the Fruitport volleyball team.

The entire Trojan team played like it was on a mission to reclaim its spot as one
of the top eight teams in Class B on Thursday on its way to a three-game sweep of
Lakes 8 conference rival Fremont. Continue Reading

Fruitport finishes Fremont in three straight games in regional finals

By Grant Lofdahl | Advance Newspapers, November 18, 2008 6:02 p.m.

SPARTA – It's always good to be able to finish better than you started.

The Fruitport volleyball team has started slowly in some of its MHSAA tournament
games over the past couple weeks. Last Thursday night the Trojans started out pretty
well and finished with a bang as they defeated Fremont in three straight games,
25-19, 25-20 and 25-10. The result was the Trojans' first regional championship
since 2005 and a berth in the Class B quarterfinals. Continue Reading

Fremont, Fruitport win to reach regional finals

Bruce Van Baren | The Grand Rapids Press, November 14, 2008 12:57 a.m.

SPARTA — Belding could not stop Fremont’s offense in Tuesday’s Class B regional semifinal.

Fremont’s Kelse Moon had 16 kills, Sydney Hindes had 13 and Kaitlin Huissen finished with eight kills as the Packers cruised to a 25-13, 16-25, 25-18, 25-16 win to advance to Thursday’s regional final against Fruitport.

“(Kelse Moon) was incredible,” Belding coach Mikayla Linebaugh said. “They had three hitters that could move well. It just wasn’t our night.”

Fremont coach Scott Panozzo was equally impressed with his team’s performance.

“When you can count on three players to go out and score points for you, it’s a pretty good problem to have,” Panozzo said. “We’ve played 55 games and they’ve been just as steady as you can be.”

After Fremont (37-11-7) dominated game one, Belding (36-17-2) responded with a convincing win in game two. After losing a close game three, Belding started game four on a 9-3 run. But Fremont’s outside hitters were to strong and easily overcame the deficit.

“We’re so close,” Linebaugh said. “We started slow, and I was proud to see them turn it around in game two, but we just didn’t click.”

Moon led Fremont with four aces and three blocks. She added 14 digs. Hindes also had 14 digs, and Huissen had five aces.

“It’s really fun when we all play as a team like that,” Moon said. “It’s totally a team effort and trusting your teammates.”

Fremont lost two matches to Fruitport in the regular season, both in four games.

“Everyone says it’s psyching us out, but really it’s pumping us up,” Moon said. “We’ll play them hard.”

Fruitport wins in four

Fruitport defeated Alma 25-20, 25-10, 24-26, 25-11 in the regional semifinals.

“We play (Fremont) a lot,” Fruitport coach Nicole Bayle said. “The more you play somebody, the odds are against you when you’re the victor. They’re a good team, and we have to be ready to go.”

Naomi Bush led Fruitport with 19 kills, and Charlene Stolarz anchored the defense with 28 digs.

“Naomi is the spark for our offense, and she doesn’t make a lot of mistakes,” Bayle said. “(Passing and defense) were huge. Charlene played great. She cues in and she makes it look easy.”

Alma coach Steve Humm said Fruitport’s late comeback in game one was the turning point in the match.
